I’m wondering what the ideal drafting distance is in a long freestyle event. Naturally i’m guessing being as close as possible to the lane line would be important. But i’m wondering what the ideal distance behind would be and what factors would influence it.

On a related matter with respect to the leading swimmer who might decide to move over to the other side of the lane or perhaps try and pull slightly ahead to deny the opportunity to draft. How far ahead is the minimum they should they aim for to be comfortable they aren’t giving away a drafting opportunity…

I’m curious to know if there are any opinions…

I’m curious what other answers will be but I’ve always loved sitting right at the hips of the person I’m drafting on… even better if they are a little bigger than me! Have paced out many 1000s and miles this way over the years 🙂
